M. Brett Smith has over 23 years of commercial real estate finance experience working for several of the largest financial institutions and investment banking real estate platforms in the United States. Prior to co-founding Tannery Brook Partners, LLC, Mr. Smith held various positions at Wachovia Securities and its predecessors from 1995 to 2009.  From 2007 to 2008, Mr. Smith served as a Managing Director of Wachovia Securities’ Real Estate Capital Markets platform, with overall responsibility for $45 Billion of income property balance sheet exposure, as well as all CMBS origination and securitization.  During this time, he also had oversight of Wachovia’s Multifamily Capital Group, which included all Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and FHA lending platforms, as well as the firm’s $10+ Billion multifamily servicing book and $3.0 Billion tax credit equity portfolio in low income tax credits and historical tax credits.  From 2003 to 2006, Mr. Smith served as Managing Director and Head of Originations for the Real Estate Capital Markets platform, including all fixed rate CMBS and most structured finance originations, inclusive of bridge loans, mezzanine loans and joint venture equity investments. From 2000 to 2002, Mr. Smith was Managing Director and Head of National Correspondent Relationships, as well as Head of Wholesale Originations for the Real Estate Capital Markets platform. From 1995 to 2001, he was Director and Head of Southeastern U.S. originations for the CMBS platform.

Prior to joining Wachovia Securities, Mr. Smith spent eight years with the commercial real estate groups at Bank of America and BB&T, with a focus on traditional balance sheet lending in the real estate sector.

Mr. Smith received a Masters in Business Administration from the Babcock School of Management at Wake Forest University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
